Are your gadgets covered on your travel insurance policy?

In general, standard travel insurance would not automatically include cover for your gadgets like your iPhone, laptop or earphones. Some policies would allow you to add one or two gadgets at a higher premium, but depending on the policy you will most likely also have a limit of how much you can insure the items for. Generally, the more premium your travel would be the higher your limit would be to insure your gadget(s).

You might need to buy extra cover for the gadgets you plan to take with on your next trip – usually this is a very simple add on to your existing travel policy. The next question is usually: “Do I even need cover for my gadgets?”. The simple answer is yes. We all travel with very expensive smartphones, laptops, cameras and more. It would be worthwhile to add some cover in case one or all of the items get stolen or damaged.

Most travel add-on gadget insurance policies would offer cover for the following devices: laptops, mobiles, tablets, cameras. portable game consoles, smartwatches, headphones. Some insurance companies can / would offer for other devices too, ensure you compare your travel policies and understand what you are covered for and what is not included in your policy.

A reminder that all travel policies have exclusions – be sure to check that list as it’s an easy way to see at a glance if the gadget you are looking to cover would be included or excluded in the policy. Some exclusion examples with regards to gadget insurance could be the number of gadgets you are allowed to insure, the number of claims you can make in a certain period of time, the age of your gadget (i.e. more than 5 years old will not be insured) and more.
